Transmission Control Module Problems? Here’s What You Need to Know

Suppose you’ve recently had transmission problems with your car. In that case, you may have wondered whether the issue is related to a transmission control module (TCM). If you’ve never heard of this before, don’t worry. You’re not alone! This article will tell you what you need to know about transmission control modules and why they can cause issues with your vehicle’s transmission.

What is the TCM

The transmission control module is a computer system responsible for the efficient function of your car’s transmission. Much like the Engine Control Module (ECM), the TCM gathers real-time data to adjust the transmission’s operation to keep your vehicle running smoothly.

How a TCM Works

The TCM gathers information from several sensors to keep the transmission working properly. Some of these sensors are the throttle sensor, turbine speed sensor, and fluid temperature sensor. These sensors give information about driving conditions and vehicle performance, allowing the TCM to change gears accordingly. The TCM works with your car’s ECM to maintain smooth acceleration and performance no matter the conditions.

Signs of a Failing TCM?

Several signs indicate your car’s TCM is on its way out. One of the most common issues is gear slippage. This occurs because the TCM is not giving the correct commands to shift, which can cause sudden shifting or not shifting at all. Another common symptom is failure to accelerate as usual. If your vehicle cannot change gears correctly, your car’s acceleration will suffer. Incorrect shift patterns will cause your vehicle to be in the wrong gear based on engine speed and driving conditions, affecting fuel economy and performance. Finally, you may be unable to shift gears if the TCM fails.

What Should You Do About a Failing TCM?

If you notice any signs of a failing TCM, you must see your mechanic get it diagnosed. While the check engine light will usually accompany the symptoms of a failing TCM, this may not always be the case. Depending on the specific issue, your mechanic will need to repair or possibly replace the TCM. While this is a significant repair, you should not try to ignore signs of TCM failure as they will eventually render your vehicle inoperable.

If you suspect your car’s TCM is failing, do not ignore the warning signs. Instead, see your car care professional to get your car’s transmission back to working correctly.
