What Your Check Engine Light Means

The check engine light coming on is usually accompanied by a feeling of dread, and sometimes a loss for what to do next. The check engine light in your car, usually a small yellow or orange light in the outline of an engine located on the dashboard, can mean any number of things, from a needed oil change to a small engine misfire and everything in between.

But put simply, the check engine light serves as a warning to drivers that their vehicle has detected an issue with the fuel and exhaust systems, emissions, ignition, or other engine related systems in your car. Sometimes, the light might be simply illuminated, other times it might be blinking or flashing. Regardless of how the check engine light has come on, it’s important to be familiar with the system and get the engine issue resolved as soon as possible.

When Your Check Engine Light is On

If your check engine light has come on for longer than a few seconds when you turn the ignition and stays on when your car is running, it could be an indication that something is wrong with your vehicle. If it’s simply illuminated, there are a few steps drivers can take themselves to rule out anything that wouldn’t require a visit to the auto shop. First, check that your gas cap is on tightly, as a loose gas cap can trigger the check engine light. After you’ve checked that and the check engine light is still illuminated, you could simply be in need of an oil change. If you have gotten an oil change recently and your check engine light is on, you should take your ride into your mechanic as soon as you can for an engine diagnostic.

Flashing or Blinking Check Engine Light

When your check engine light is flashing or blinking rather than just staying illuminated, you could be in for some serious trouble with your engine. Ignoring a flashing check engine light can lead to further and more permanent damage to your engine and vehicle, so it’s important to take it to a trusted mechanic as soon as possible to avoid more costly repairs down the road.
