Signs My Car Has an Electrical Problem

If your car, truck, or SUV has an electrical problem, drive straight to our shop. If you smell burning odors, the electrical system is overheating, so it is safer to have your vehicle towed to our shop. There are many things that can cause electrical problems in automobiles. Let’s talk about the signs that your car has an electrical problem below and what may be causing the problem.

Hard Starts

If it is difficult to start your automobile, the issue could be the starter. This is actually an ignition part, so it is an electrical problem. It bears note, however. It may be also difficult to start your automobile if the alternator is dying and not charging the battery. In addition, you may also have a phantom electrical drain that is making it impossible to start your automobile.

Dead Battery

A dying alternator or phantom drain will take the battery’s energy and deplete it. Consequently, if your battery is dying frequently and you have to jump-start it regularly, your car has an electrical problem. You should not have to jump-start the battery to get the vehicle started unless the battery is old.

Slow Components

Another sign that your automobile has an electrical problem is slow components. If you have noticed that your power seats do not adjust as quickly as they used to, your vehicle is not producing enough electricity for the seats. Other components may also slow down or malfunction until the electrical problem is resolved.

Burning Odors

As we mentioned above, burning odors can indicate that the electrical system is overheating. A common cause of an overheating electrical system is a malfunctioning alternator. When the alternator produces too much power, it overloads the system and overheats it. It can also cause power surges throughout the system.

Blown Fuses

These power surges can blow various fuses depending on where they are in the electrical system. Generally, it is rare to have to replace a fuse in the fuse box in your automobile. If you find that this is something normal that you do on a regular basis, bring your vehicle to our shop so we can inspect the electrical system. Something is wrong and is blowing out the fuses.

Finally, you may end up with the dashboard warning light if the electrical system is malfunctioning. In most modern automobiles, this warning light is the battery light. If this light comes on, head straight to our shop so we can determine the problem and fix it.
