What You Need to Know About Your Automotive Filters

Let’s talk about automotive filters and what you need to know. You need to know what filters you have in your car, utility vehicle, or truck. You need to know when the filters need to be changed. It’s also a good idea to know what the filters do. We are going to explain all of this below and provide general recommendations for filter changes. Your owner’s manual will have specific recommendations.

Air

The air filter in the engine removes the dirt and grime out of the air that flows through the grille. Your automobile’s engine needs this air to produce combustion. The air filter should be changed every 12,000 miles. You can also put your car on an annual changing plan if you don’t drive it that much. A clogged air filter can affect your engine performance and fuel economy.

Cabin

The air filter in the cabin keeps the air that you breathe inside your automobile clean and fresh. You will have to check your owner’s manual to see if your vehicle has a cabin air filter. Not all automobiles do. If you have a cabin filter, the general recommendation for changing is every 30,000 miles. This being said, some cabin filters need to be changed much sooner.

Fuel

The fuel filter makes sure that all of the dirt and sediment in the fuel is removed before the fuel is burned in the combustion chamber. The fuel filter needs to be changed every 30,000 miles. You can also put your vehicle on a schedule that changes the fuel filter every two years if, again, you don’t drive it that much. A clogged fuel filter will affect your engine performance.

Oil

The oil filter is automatically changed when you get the oil changed. As such, this filter is changed every 3,000 miles. The oil filter removes the dirt that the oil collects while it circulates through the engine. This helps to keep your engine clean. A clogged oil filter can prevent oil flow and cause serious damage to your engine in a very short time.

Transmission

Finally, the transmission filter keeps the transmission oil clean. It needs to be changed every 30,000 miles. This, too, is a filter that is not found in every automobile. As such, you should check your owner’s manual to see if your vehicle is equipped with a transmission filter.
